Castello di Tavolese, Tuscany

As one winds through the hillsides of northern Tuscany, outside of Florence, a remarkable sight beholds the traveler, for down a long driveway near the town of Marcialla, one sees a perfectly kept castello, set down on a beautiful hilltop with the undulating hills of the surrounding countryside holding this perfect castle in their arms. The “Castello di Tavolese” has its origin in the 13th century. Farinata degli Uberti (who is even mentioned in Dante’s “Divina Commedia”), his
brother Pietro detto Asino (donkey), an officer of Manfred of Hohenstaufen King of Napels, and the Canigiani family, from which came Petrarca’s mother, the Giugnis and the counts Capponi. In 1988 it was bought and restored by the actual owner, Clemente Carlo Kaiser.

The property is extended over 150 acres and the main production is Chianti
dei Colli Fiorentini “Titolato” and extravergine olive oil “Laudemio”, both trade marks reflecting absolute quality. The Distilleria Bonollo from Greve in Chianti produces, using the fresh skins of pressed grapes of the Tavolese wines, a soft Grappa with a rich flavour.

The big farmhouse beside the castle has been transformed into six residences, elegantly furnished, and with all modern comforts but still keeping the atmosphere of the ancient Tuscan country houses. On cooler days you can light the fireplace, read a good book and drink a good glass of Rubicondo. There is in an adjacent building a heated swimming pool which combines with an outdoor pool, overlooking the vast, ancient Tuscan hills. The Sala della Cinta can be organized for guest dinner parties up to twenty-two people, where you can taste the specialties and the wines of Tavolese.

What an ideal location to stay and visit the medieval hill towns of Tuscany.
Florence is less than half an hour and Siena just a little bit more; San Gimignano twenty minutes, Volterra and Pisa one hour, and a few more minutes to the beaches of Versilia. The guest can walk in the castle’s woods or go horseback riding round the corner. There are many excellent restaurants in the area.
