La Collegiata

The Hotel Restaurant La Collegiata stands on a hill with splendid view of the towers of S. Gimignano surrounded by a park of cypress trees. The building was erect in 1587 in Strada bear the parish of S. Michele as a convent for the order of the Franciscan Cappuccini fathers at the request of the inhabitants of S. Gimignano. The renaissance building reflects the elegance and restraint of the Tuscan style in pietra serena, typical of the region, and red brick. It has been restored in keeping with the history of the locality, while satisfying modern standards of comfort and elegance.

The drive leads to a large car-park below an Italian garden, delightful to walk in one can visit the old chapel in the grounds, you may also be tempted to take a dip in the open-air heated swimming pool surrounded by lawns, where one can also enjoy light refreshment.

In the cloister is the fine "cisterna" or well similar in style to the one in Piazza della Cisterna at S. Gimignano. The cloister opens into the reception area, the coffee shop, the wine bar, the sitting rooms, the reading room, the television room and the sala del caminetto with a large fireplace where the golden colours of the tapestries and the frescos recall the Sienese palace style of the same period. There is a charming room underneath the well, paved in red brick tiles, where wine and local products can be tasted.

The impressive building of La Collegiata which included the convent church, has been restored to accommodate a restaurant which offers a cuisine based on the fresh flavours of the kitchen garden, the aroma of wood and traditional Tuscan recipes adapted to please the modern tasted of people of many different cultures who have always visited Chianti.

The hotel has twenty rooms, some of those on the first floor overlook the inner courtyard and all have some attractive architectural detail, a mullioned window, a small balcony or stone door jamb. Every room is sound proofed and has private direct dial telephone, satellite
TV, fridge bar, jacuzzi bath tub, air conditioning and a personal wall safe.

There is a master bedroom in the tower and on the upper floor is a large jacuzzi bath tub from where the entire panorama of the valley below can be admired.

In the vicinity are tennis courts, horse riding and 18 hole golf course.
